What President Musharaf wants to Convey to Indians about recent blasts at Mumbai and else where?

Just some hours back I was watching a channel of the Indian TV and in the news there was an item; in that President Musharraf is asking for the valid proof for the particiapation of Pakistan based terrorists in the recent bomb blasts in the suburban trains at Mumbai & elsewhere. He has to find it out from his inteligence ISI to identify the group involved in these activities. Once an Indian Airlines flight was highjacked to Afghanistan and the passengers were exchanged for criminals in the dress of the clergy! They are still at very large at Pakistan and are leaders of the so called freedom movement out fits. Why they are not conducting their liberation activities inside Pakistan as there are a number of problems are felt by local Muslims themselves. Why they teach Islam to Indians in India?

Answer: For a long time, security experts have been pointing out that terror in India has a global connection; 7/11 has proved just how deep-rooted it is.

Experts say ISI hand in terror acts can be traced back to Zia ul-Haq's time. However, jehadi terrorism in Indian territory outside Kashmir is a post-1992 (after the Babri demolition) phenomenon.

"But in real terms, terror in India went global since March 2006," says B Raman, former additional secretary, Cabinet Secretariat. Investigations into recent terrorist attacks and subsequent arrests and seizures in different parts of India, particularly Aurangabad, have shown a growing alliance between jehadi groups operating from Pakistan and Bangladesh, and ideologically extreme groups in India.

"In fact, the Mumbai blasts are identical to the Madrid train blasts. Almost the same pattern was followed in both places," says Raman. It signals a new phase of terrorism in India, where international groups like LeT and HUJI are exerting influence over small and diffused groups of people to take up arms against the State in the name of religion.

As Ajai Sahni, executive director, Institute of Conflict Management points out, all these groups have an ISI link. "There is clear evidence that ISI controls LeT, Jaish, Al Badr et al. The Taliban and the Al-Qaida too are its creation. It's a complex relationship."

Sahni likens Al-Qaida to a virtual corporate. "There is a leadership but no centralised control, all groups operate like franchisees. They have a common vision, share the same motivation and follow similar modules to secure their objectives. What's more, anyone can become a member at will." It's the perfect example of a decentralised, autonomous corporation. And it uses modern communication deftly to achieve its goals.

The core group consists of 300-400 Arabs and Afghans. Their job is to chalk out objectives and mastermind catastrophic acts like 9/11 . "But they don't bother with micro-management of groups under them," Sahni says. If the same methods were used to run a corporate, Osama bin Laden would have been lauded as a clever capitalist.

While terror networks in India are linked to the ISI, they may not be based in Pakistan anymore. After the war on Afghanistan, and increased US military presence in Pakistan, they are shifting base to Bangladesh and Nepal.

Brig Arun Sehgal (retd), Centre for Strategic Studies and Simulation, United Service Institution of India, cites an example: "Three years ago, an ISI cell was busted in Jaisalmer and was traced to Kathmandu. The cell was recruiting people from the Alwar region," he says. "Of late, ISI has 'outsourced' terror to various linked outfits. These include the banned al-Umma group responsible for the Coimbatore bombings. Links between terrorists groups of the north-east, LTTE, HUJI etc, are also emerging now,."

Who are the local recruits? "Disgruntled youth who are available for a fee. They come from all strata, the uneducated, unemployed boys to the well-educated ones with angst," says analyst Bharat Karnad. According to Wing Commander R S Shukla (retd), author of The ISI Connection, the recruits are from three sources: fundamentalists; the confused and marginalised with an axe to grind; and those seeking pecuniary gains.

And these elements are found everywhere, from the villages of UP to Tamil Nadu, the slums of Mumbai to the illegal Bangladeshis of Delhi. Even among educated professionals of the white-collar world.
As for funds, Saudi charities and humanitarian organisations play a disturbing role. "Either they take the hawala route or use conduits to smuggle money in," says Gen R K Sawhney (retd). Of late, they even have fund managers.

Local modules work independently and most use pseudonyms. No two members know each other, so even if they are caught, not much information is revealed. The mastermind may have a regular job, with no evidence to connect him to the module. Sahni says, "Modern technology has made mass movements irrelevant. A few dozen can keep a terrorist movement alive perpetually."

Says Raman, "Al-Qaida, LeT, Dawood's mafia group and others involved in such terrorist strikes live under the protection of the ISI. They would not have been able to carry out a sophisticated operation like 7/11 without the ISI's knowledge.

But it's difficult to say whether ISI was actively involved in the planning and execution." Everyone, including Gen Musharraf, is waiting for the final evidence.

How many terrorist attacks have there been on egypt?

Annually would be best, for a homework assignment.

Answer: Egypt has not been listed (yet) as being a country with reported terrorist attacks..

From the website terrorism-research.com, these are the countries that have reported terrorist attacks;
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Countries with large terrorism presence

Terrorists have long found refuge in countries and in many cases worked hand in hand with the local governments. Today several countries continue to attract terrorists for training and consipiring their attacks. The host countries do not try to disassociate themselves fully from their ties to terrorism and in some cases continue to provide tacit support and use terror to accomplish broader objectives. Some of the countries with significant terrorist operations include:

Afghanistan
Afghanistan became the hotbed of Islamic terror activities in the mid-1990s. With the radical Taliban government establishing control, several radical Islamic (mostly Sunni) terror organizations used Afghanistan as their training and operational base. Al Qaeda was the broad umbrella organization that recruited terrorists from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Central Asia and around the world, training them in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Some of the terrosist groups still operating in the region include Al Qaeda, Al-Jihad, Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, Islamic Group, Armed Islamic Group, Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.
Iran
Iran has long been an active sponsor of Islamic terrorism, including accusations of it supporting subversive activities in Iraq. Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Ministry of Intelligence and Security were involved in the planning of and support for terrorist acts and continued to exhort a variety of groups that use terrorism to pursue their goals. Several terrorist groups including Lebanese Hizballah, HAMAS, the Palestine Islamic Jihad, and Ahmad Jibril's PFLP-GC have been provided funding, safehaven, training, and weapons in Iran.

Iraq
Since the US led invasion of Iraq, the country has fallen into a violent spiral. The presence of US troops has attracted Islamic terrorists from the Middle-East and around the world. Al-Qaeda is believed to have established a toe-hold in the country along with various splinter groups. Some of the other terror organizations active in Iraq include Ansar al-Islam, Al-Faruq Brigades, Al-Mahdi Army, Iraqi Resistance Islamic Front (JAMI), Jamaat al-Tawhid wa'l-Jihad, Jaysh Muhammad and Kurdistan People’s Congress (KHK).

Pakistan
Pakistan has long been a staging ground and planning centre for Islamic terrorists operating in South Asia. After the launch of Operation Enduring Freedom, thousands of terrorists were either killed or driven out of Afghansistan, mostly finding refuge in Pakistan. Pakistan and its secret service (ISI) have also been accused of training and funding several terrorist groups operating in Indian Kashmir and the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. The links have long been clear, since the the terrorist groups based in Pakistan operate in plain sight and have a distinct Afghan and Indian focus. The massive leak of U.S. Intelligence data on the Wikileaks website further showed the complicity of the Pakistani state with terrorist groups, used to establish a (false) state of deniability.

Pakistani groups have been aligned with Al Qaeda, based in Pakistan and have been responsbile for numerous terrorist attacks in Afghanistan and have expanded their sights to Europe and North America. Some of these terror groups include Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Muhammad, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Al Qaeda, Tehreek-e-Jaferia, Sipah-e-Sahaba, Al Badr, Harkat ul-Ansar, Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Tehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi, Jamaat ul-Fuqra and Muslim United Army.

Syria
Even as Syria continues to reduce its presence in Lebanaon, it also continues to fund and host Palestinian and possibly Iraqi terrorist organizations. HAMAS, the PIJ, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine continue to operate from Syria.

Sudan
The African country of Sudan been a training hub and safe haven for members of several of the more violent international terrorist and radical Islamic groups of the last decade. Among the terror groups known to have operated from Sudan are Hezbollah (Party of God), Palestine Islamic Jihad, Abu Nidal Organization, HAMAS (Islamic Resistance Movement) and several smaller Islamic insurgent groups operating regionally in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Uganda, and Tunisia.

Which one is the nearest metro station to Delhi Cantt?
The starting station will be Pitam Pura.

Answer: Hi,

There is no direct Metro link to Delhi Cantt Railway Station. You have two options to reach Delhi Cantt Railway Station i.e. From Pitampura to Kashmir Gate Red Line Metro. Then take the Yellow Line Metro from Kashmir Gate to New Delhi. From New Delhi Metro Station to Dhula Kuan Metro Station By Airport Express link...... From Dhula Kuan Station to Delhi Cantt Railway Station by Bus or Auto...

The other options is that from Pitampura to Indrolok Station. Take the Green line Metro from Indralok to Ashok park station get down there and take there to Kirti nagar metro train from Ashok park to Kirti Nagar( 5-10 minutes train frequency). Then you have to change again the blue line metro from Kirti Nagar to Janakpuri West... or Uttam Nagar..... From their you have to take bus or auto to reach Delhi Cantt Railway Station....... Buses no 724 will very frequent in this route.

Or you have the options to take auto from Pitampura to Delhi Cantt railway station......

Answer: Times Square Bomber Linked With CIA-Controlled Terror Group

Jaish-e-Muhammad founded by CIA-MI6 asset who bankrolled 9/11 hijackers

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet.com
Thursday, May 6, 2010

A man arrested in Pakistan in connection with the Times Square car bombing attempt who had traveled with accused bomber Faisal Shahzad is a member of a terrorist organization that is controlled by British MI6 and the CIA.

Sheik Mohammed Rehan, who was arrested on Tuesday in Karachi, “Allegedly drove with Shahzad from Karachi to Peshawar on July 7, 2009, in a pickup truck, authorities said. They returned to Karachi July 22. It is not known why they went to Peshawar and whether they met with anyone there,” reports the L.A. Times.

Rehan is a member of the militant group Jaish-e-Muhammad, a terrorist organization that came to prominence in the mid-1990’s and has been involved in attacks in the disputed Kashmir border region between India and Pakistan. The group also helped carry out the December 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament which brought India and Pakistan to the brink of nuclear war, tensions that proved very lucrative for British and American arms manufacturers who sold weapons to both sides.

“The December 2001 terrorist attacks on the Indian parliament — which contributed to pushing India and Pakistan to the brink of war — were conducted by two Pakistan-based rebel groups, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Muhammad, both of which are covertly supported by Pakistan’s ISI,” writes Michel Chossudovsky. “Needless to say, these ISI-supported terrorist attacks serve the geopolitical interests of the US. They not only contribute to weakening and fracturing the Indian Union, they also create conditions which favor the outbreak of a regional war between Pakistan and India.”

Jaish-e-Muhammad, the group now emerging in connection with the Times Square incident, was founded by Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, the 9/11 bagman who delivered $100,000 from the United Arab Emirates to Mohammed Atta at the behest of General Mahmud Ahmed, then head of the ISI. Mahmud Ahmed, the man who ordered Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh to bankroll the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, was meeting with Republican Congressman Porter Goss and Democratic Senator Bob Graham in Washington DC on the morning of 9/11. In the days before and after the attack, Ahmed also met with CIA Head George Tenet as well as current Vice-President Joe Biden, then Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

In a report on Jaish-e-Muhammad’s involvement in the murder of Daniel Pearl, who was investigating the ISI, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that the Pakistani government, “Believe that Saeed Sheikh’s power comes not from the ISI, but from his connections with our own CIA.”

Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf also alleged that Sheikh was recruited by MI6 while studying in London for the effort to destabilize Bosnia. During the 1992-1995 Bosnia conflict, the CIA helped Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda to train and arm Bosnian Muslims.

In 2002, the London Times reported that Sheikh “is no ordinary terrorist but a man who has connections that reach high into Pakistan’s military and intelligence elite and into the innermost circles of Osama Bin Laden and the al-Qaeda organization.”

Despite Sheikh’s intimate involvement in numerous acts of terror as well as political kidnappings, including the 2008 Mumbai massacre, he was protected by both the CIA and British intelligence at every turn.

To recap, this is the man who founded the group now emerging in connection with the botched Times Square bombing – a CIA and MI6 asset.

“Experts believe Jaish-e-Muhammad still benefits from links with Pakistan’s powerful government intelligence community. Some experts believe Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency facilitated the group’s formation,” states yesterday’s L.A. Times article.

As the vast majority of geopolitical analysts concur, the Pakistani ISI is virtually nothing more than a CIA outpost. The ISI does nothing without the Agency giving its approval. The CIA has paid millions of dollars to the ISI since 9/11, accounting for no less than a third of the ISI’s entire budget, despite the foreign spy agency’s notorious history of funding and arming terrorist groups like Jaish-e-Muhammad and despite the fact that it bankrolled the 9/11 hijackers.

Since the CIA has its fingerprints all over almost every Middle Eastern terror group, it’s unsurprising that an Agency connection to the Times Square bomber has come to light. We’ve never come across a terrorist who wasn’t trained, equipped, radicalized, entrapped, or provocateured by a western intelligence agency or a terror group controlled by a western intelligence agency.

Hi i want to know if there is a direct train from hyderabad to srinagar?

Actually if not can anyone tell me is there a direct train to Kashmir or anywhere that is most closer to srinigar.

Answer: Srinagar is not linked with any major station of Indian railways. Only Passenger train run between Anatnag and Badgam and Srinagar is an intermediate station in this section. You Can reach up to Udhampur from New Delhi and from there you have to go by road to Anantnag and then catch train to Srinagar from Anatnag. There are so many trains from New Delhi to Udhampur but Train No. 12445 Uttar Sampark Kranti is best because it departs from New Delhi at 20:50 and reaches Udhampur at 8:05 Hrs.

What is freedom and freedom fight? Kashmiries are freedom fighter or terrorist ?

BOMBAY, India - Eight bombs exploded in first-class compartments of packed Bombay commuter trains Tuesday, killing 190 people and wounding hundreds in a well-coordinated terror attack on the heart of a city that embodies Indias global ambitions.

Suspicion quickly fell on Kashmiri militants who have repeatedly carried out nearly simultaneous explosions in attacks on Indian cities, including bombings last year at three markets in New Delhi.

Pakistan, Indias rival over the disputed territory of Kashmir, quickly condemned Tuesdays bombings. Even so, India alleges that Pakistan supports the Muslim militants, and analysts said a Kashmiri link to the blasts could slow — or perhaps even derail — a peace process that has gained momentum between the nuclear rivals over the past several years.

Answer: what is freedom?
freedom when related to a nation means ....

a country is said to be free or possess freedom is that it is run by leader of a country elected by the people or being succeded(it depends on what country is following i.e. democracy or whatever)

where people are free to do any thing under law as for example india got its independence in 1947 and pakistan in 1947 a day before india.

freedom when considered with kashmir........

these f**king pakisatanis still think that kashmir should be under pakistan though during partioning of pakistan kashmir's king chose to go under india.but pakistan wanted it to be under his teritory.

that is why pak is still creating choas that kashmir should be free as they now cannnot claim kashmir they want it to be free nation and call this agitation as kashmirs freedom movement

what is freedom fight?
the movement created to get freedom is called freedom fight

pak calls its agitation like killing innocent people its freedom fight
pakis call that these killings are bieng done by terrorist groups not by them
but they fund these groups and even send there military with these groups and have iven them spaces for there training camps

kashmiris are niether fighters nor terrorists they are innocent people who once lived in heaven but now there childhood is now spent in escaping bullets

i hope u r clear otherwise contact me on abhizspirit@yahoo.com

Why do indians and pakis fight for an iceberg called kashmir?

What is soo special about that place., its and ice covered place ., with no natural resources

Answer: That ice covered place is often used by terrorist as base camp to do their terrorism activity in rest of the parts of India. Surrendering the Iceberg to Pakistan would worse the situation.
Pakistanis were given their part of land in 1947. Why do ask for more?

@KPL. So you think it was "directed" by the government to rape and torture women? It's possible in case of the Isreal or US army (or may be British army too?). They have such history associated with them. But no way Indian army can be that inhumane. You have really no idea about how things work there in Kashmir. The Pakistani government originally supported, trained and armed the insurgency in Kashmir until groups linked to the Kashmiri insurgency twice attempted to assassinate their former President Pervez Musharraf. Musharraf decided to end open support for such groups after that incident. It's the Pakistani government , their army and their secret service ISI who has been seeding communal hatred in that region. Do India interfere in any way in Pakistan occupied Kashmir(PoK)?
As the state of Jammu and Kashmir is India's territory, we have every right to protect our international borders.
BTW most of Human rights violation reports have been found to be false.

Why are some reasons Pakistan and India are mad at each other?

its for an essay i have to write.
i think there was some dispute over Kashmir, but im not sure about details.. if anyone can help me that would be greeat !

Answer: Here is the high level description:

The internal conflict between Hindus and Muslims has received some of its stimulus since 1947 from the international conflict between India and Pakistan. One of the great tragedies of the freedom struggle was the relentless polarization of opinion between the Congress, which came to represent mostly Hindus, and the All-India Muslim League (Muslim League--see Glossary), which eventually stood behind a demand for a separate homeland for a Muslim majority. This division, encouraged under British rule by provisions for separate electorates for Muslims, led to the partition of Pakistan from India and the outbreak of hostilities over Kashmir. Warfare between India and Pakistan occurred in 1947, 1965, and 1971; the last conflict led to the independence of Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) and a major strategic victory by India. Lot of Hindu families living in Pakistan (prior to seperation) were burned/killed.

Moreover UN resolution and Line of Control (Loc/Border) has been breached by Pakistan, Pak army intruded into Kashmir and took control over many areas and claimed Kashmir as part of Pakistan because it's an Muslim state.

Now Kashmir is virtualy divided into another part named Pakitan occupied Kasmir (Pok). Pok is still a major hub for terrorist organizations and they easily corrupted the Muslim population to revolt against Indian government. Terrorist camps in Pok flourished and they easily infiltrated into India and created many domestic violences like train/bus bombing etc.

Because of this Indian govt have to deploy more military presence in Kashmir. It's hard to target terrorist because they blend with innocent people and live among them as a common person, Indian military did take actions against them but it came with a price (innocent people life). This added fuel to burning fire, peace loving and scenically beautiful Kashmir valley has been torned into different pieces with Military and Terrorists.

Later Pakistan stopped claiming Kashmir and changed their tone to Kashmir independence. I can keep going, Please check the below link for more information about UN resolution and Peace treaty between India and Pakistan.

Both are nuclear nations, offcourse Indian army have upper hand but damages will be severe.

Good Luck with your essay!

Suspects Are Arrested in India Commuter Rail Bombings

One person was arrested in Kenya and three people appeared in an Indian court on Friday in connection with the train bombings in Mumbai last week that killed more than 200 people and wounded at least 800. The men are accused of helping to organize the July 11 attacks on seven trains crowded with commuters traveling home from work, officials said. - Abdul Karim Tunda, one of Indias most wanted men, is arrested in Kenya and three people appear in Indian court in connection with train bombings in Mumbai that killed over 200 people and wounded at least 800; suspects in Mumbai are Khaleel Aziz Sheikh, Kamal Ahmed Ansari and Mumtaz Ahmed Chowdhury; photo (M) - By AMELIA GENTLEMAN; Hari Kumar contributed reporting for this article.

Why do people demand Pakistan to do more against terrorists when Pakistan has suffered the most losses?

Can a human being do more than sacrificing their life? Has any other army in the world suffered so many casualties fighting terrorists? Dozens of terrorists are killed by Pakistani soldiers everyday (24 terrorists today) , what more do you want?

Total Pakistan Army casualties in War on Terror:
3,500 soldiers killed

Total NATO casualties in War on Terror:
1,763 soldiers killed (US: 1070, UK: 285, Others: 408)

Answer: What I want to say might hurt u, so let me put it in this way :

First of all understand the past :
Pakistan's biggest mistake was joining hands with USA in defeating USSR & throwing them out of Afganistan (during 1980s). US provided money and machine and Pakistan gave them manpower. After the defeat of USSR these terrorists institutions should have been dismantled by USA & Pakistan but this was not done instead they ruled Afganistan. Now Pakistan seeing terrorists as a good way to infuse insurgency started building its own infrastructure for terrorist training in POK (Pak Occupied Kashmir) & outer skirts of Pakistan. Training was provided by Pakistan Army and these terrorists were sent to Kashmir and other parts of India.

Everything was going well and according to the plan untill 9/11 happened. Pakistan was forced to join the America's war on terror. Pakistani Army was forced to fight against those whom they themselves had created. But ISI (Pakistan's Intelligence Agency) never deviated from its main plan of inducing terrorists in India.

Now the present situation is this that one hand Pakistan is fighting against Taliban on its NWFP and on the other hand it has 100+ terrorist training camps operating on its land. Also Army Officers regularly visit these camps. The Army Major held recently is one of the many such proofs.
The CIA says that there is an ISI within ISI which supports the Taliban.

Conclusion :
1) The terrorism policy of Pakistan has backfired.

2) Pakistan is fighting its War On Terror only because of the pressure of "Uncle Sam".

3) It still supports terrorism and is using it as a tool.

4) Attacks like 9/11, London Attacks, Mumbai Attacks and the failed New York Attack all these have direct or indirect link with Pakistan.

Thus all these things mean that Pakistan is the largest exporter of Terrorism in the World and thats why every nation is saying that Pakistan should take some tough steps against terrorists operating from its land.

what do you think about the BOMB BLASTS in MUMBAI today?

WHO is trying to achieve WHAT by such heinous acts?

Answer: Security forces to probe link between Mumbai, Srinagar attacks

New Delhi, July 12 (PTI): Security agencies were on Tuesday night investigating as to who were behind the deadly blasts in Mumbai and whether there was any link with the grenade attacks in Srinagar earlier in the day.

# Mumbai Suburban Train Blasts

As for the five grenade blasts in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir police claimed that Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba militant outfit was behind the strikes that left eight people dead.

Till late Tuesday night, no one claimed responsibility for the blasts in suburban trains in Mumbai. The security agencies are said to have some leads but were unwilling to disclose any pointers.

A caller, who gave his name as Abdulla Raznavi, claiming to be a spokesman for LeT, telephoned PTI office in Mumbai Tuesday night to say that the outfit was not involved in the blasts in India's financial capital and that it condemned the attacks.

"We deeply condemn the blasts in Mumbai and strongly deny any involvement of LeT," he said.

What is the differance between the Taliban and Al Quieda?

And also what is their objectives/motives

Answer: The Taliban is a religious militia made up mainly from the Pashtun ethnic group that originally filled the power vacuum in post-Soviet Afghanistan. It's likely they received significant backing from elements within Pakistan. Their aim is to take control of Afghanistan and impose their strict interpretation of Sharia law on the country, as they did prior to the NATO led coalition flattening them. They also seek to take control of all or part of Pakistan, they're active in the traditionally lawless frontier regions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Al Qaeda is a terrorist organisation. They grew out of the so called Afghan Arabs, Arab volunteers who went to aid the Afghans in their fight against the Soviet occupation. That war ended shortly before the first Gulf War broke out and when the US sent forces to the Gulf they became the main focus of Al Qaeda's enmity. The main ideology of Al Qaeda is Qutbism, based on the writings of Egyptian militant intellectual Sayyid Qutb. It basically calls for the rejection of all western influences in Islamic lands and a strict interpretation of Sharia. The biggest issue for Al Qaeda is the presence of US troops in Saudi Arabia, it's seen as breaching the Islamic commandment that there should be only one religion in Arabia (plus, Bin Laden despises the Al Saud family, so anyone backing them is an enemy).

The alliance between Al Qaeda and the Taliban was created when they were the only people willing to let Al Qaeda operate in their country, in exchange for Bin Laden's financial aid. AQ was chased out of their last refuge, Sudan, by US airstrikes. Once they were in Afghanistan they became rather unpopular with the Taliban, but under Pashtun culture they had to be protected. The Pashtun have a very, very strict moral code called the Pashtunwali. A big part of that is nanawati, the obligation to provide refuge to someone who asks for it and if necessary to die to protect your guests. Al Qaeda repaid the debt a couple of days before 9/11 by assassinating Ahmed Shah Massoud, the Taliban's most dangerous enemy.

As for their objectives. The Taliban are, as I said, a regional phenomenon, they're just out to control the traditional homeland of the Pashtun people.

Al Qaeda has a global agenda based on Qutbism. It seeks to unite all Islamic lands, fight all unislamic influences and wage offensive war to promote Islam. As such, it's now evolved into a sort of franchise operation. They provide aid, training, money, personnel etc, to various groups around the world that are all fighting their own little wars. For instance, they're linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group behind the Mumbai terror attack. LeT's aim is to free Kashmir from Indian rule. They're also linked to Abu Sayyaf, who are fighting for independence for Muslim regions from the Catholic Philippines. They also have links with Al-Shabab, an Islamist group in Somalia. You see what I mean about them being a global franchise? They bring local groups under the Al Qaeda umbrella, the local groups have local aims that all play a part in Al Qaeda's global agenda.

For the US and Pakistan to patch things up, Pakistan needs to quit supporting terrorists.
And repay every last dime of foreign aid it defrauded the US of while pretending to be a "trust ally" in the War on Terror.
Further, it needs to wipe out the terror groups it's been not-so-secretly supporting.
After which, oh hell, nevermind.

It'd just be easier to bomb the bejeezus out of Pakistan and get it over with.
